Your hair is dyed black, not naturally black, so unfortunately before you can lighten it you will have to strip out the black color. No bleach will NOT work, at least not very well. Sally Beauty Supply sells home kits for permanent color removal. It may take a few attempts because black is a stubborn color. If your complexion can pull it off, a color with ash in it hides gray fairly well.

You'll just need to use some hair bleach. It will have to stay in for about 90mins...which I think is the longest you can have it on at one time. I have black hair too and thats what I did last time i streaked it. Good luck!

it dyed black, which you can't really do much with. you should strip it, dye it a brown then having highlights.

yeah id listen to the Sally Woman, if you want caramel you can just bleach it cuz it will just go ginger or some weird color like that, especialy over black, trust me ive tried and it was bad.

I agree with NneNne. There is a product called Color Oops (I found it at my local grocery store) that is gentle enough to remove the color. May need to repeat a couple of times.

Good luck!
